Intense Records is Chelmsford’s longest-running independent record shop and a key part of the city’s underground music culture. Founded by DJ and promoter Jonathan Smith, the business began as an online drum & bass vinyl retailer before opening its first physical store under the railway arches on Viaduct Road in 2003.

Originally focused on drum & bass and other electronic music genres, Intense built a loyal following among DJs and collectors across the UK. Despite the decline of many record shops during the rise of digital music, it successfully adapted and expanded its range to include all genres of vinyl.

Today, Intense Records remains at the heart of Chelmsford’s music scene, serving both dedicated vinyl enthusiasts and new generations of music fans while continuing to champion underground electronic music and local culture.
